President Donald Trump is set to meet privately with family members of the fallen Army Sgt. La David Johnson at the White House on Thursday, according to a White House official.
The meeting comes just weeks after Trump was widely criticized for refusing to attend the funeral for Sgt. Johnson, who was killed in Niger in April.
Trump has defended the decision as a personal one, but said he was unable to attend because of a family medical emergency.
Johnson’s mother, Gloria Johnson, called the decision to not attend Johnson’s funeral “a betrayal.”
She said in a statement, “President Trump is trying to be a good father to his son and daughter.
I’m heartbroken for his family, and I’m shocked that he would not come to honor his son.
The President needs to understand that if he truly loves his son, he will not betray the Johnsonname. “
While he is not a bad man, he has betrayed the Johnson name.
The President needs to understand that if he truly loves his son, he will not betray the Johnsonname.
This is his responsibility.
The White House and the President will do all we can to honor Sgt. David Johnson and his family.”
The family has also requested that Trump attend the White Houses funeral, the official said.
Trump’s response to the news that the president will meet privately has been mixed, with aides pointing to the president’s visit to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware as the reason he would want to be with Johnson’s family.
In a statement issued Wednesday night, Trump thanked Johnson’s parents and thanked them for their “support.”
“My thoughts and prayers are with their family,” Trump said.
“I was unable at the time to attend, and we will continue to make that decision.
I appreciate the outpouring of support and support of the American people.”
On Monday, Trump said Johnson’s death was “one of the worst things that has happened to our country” and said Johnson “was a very loving, loving person.”
Johnson’s death sparked a national conversation on how to memorialize fallen soldiers, with the Army calling for a national flag and a statue to be erected in Johnson’s honor.
The Johnson family has demanded the president meet with them.
The president has met privately with his son’s mother several times and has met with Johnson family members, according on Thursday.
